ORCA 2020 - La France et l’OTAN en exercice de lutte anti sous-marine

La Marine nationale a invité les marines des nations alliées de l’OTAN à participer à cet exercice afin de développer leur interopérabilité et d’entraîner conjointement les marins en partageant sur leurs pratiques et savoir-faire.

Cet exercice multi-luttes met l’accent sur la lutte anti-sous-marine. Il permet de maintenir au plus haut niveau les performances dans ce domaine de la Marine nationale et de celle des marines alliées.

De nombreux moyens de surface, sous-marins et aériens y participent. Pour le volet lutte au-dessus de la surface, ce sont la frégate multi-missions Bretagne, le patrouilleur de haute mer Premier Maitre L’Her, un sous-marin nucléaire d’attaque, deux Atlantique 2 et un hélicoptère en soutien à la lutte anti-sous-marine ainsi qu’un Hawkeye. Huit bâtiments de surface intégrés dans le SNMG1 (standing NATO maritime group – force navale multinationale permanente de l’OTAN en Atlantique), les frégates belge Leopold Ier, canadienne Toronto, portugaise Corte Real, allemande Mecklenburg Vorpommern, britannique Northumberland, polonaise General Kazimierz Pulaski et espagnole Mendez Nunez ainsi qu’un sous-marin allemand.

Pour simuler des attaques aériennes contre les unités de surface, plusieurs chasseurs Rafale Marine et des plastrons aériens seront engagés.

L’exercice se déroulera en deux phases. La première comprendra des exercices élémentaires, avec les forces participantes divisées en deux groupes. La seconde développera les exercices de la phase initiale, au sein d’un exercice tactique illustratif d’un engagement de haute intensité.

ORCA 2020 - France and NATO in exercise for the anti-submarine warfare

With a rare expertise in anti-submarine wrestling, and benefiting from the performances of the FREMM-Cayman pair, the French surface forces are organizing Exercise ORCA - November 4-6, 2020 - in the Atlantic Ocean, off Brest coasts.

The French Navy has invited the navies of the allied nations of NATO to participate in this exercise in order to develop interoperability between them and train crews in cooperation by exchanging practices and sharing know-how.

This multi-battle exercise places the main emphasis on anti-submarine warfare. It allows to maintain at the highest level the performances in this field of the French Navy and those of the allied navies.

Many surface, submarine and air assets are planned to participate. French vessels : EMPD Bretagne, OPV (offshore patrol vessel) PM l'Her; a submarine; 2 MPA (maritime surveillance aircraft) Atlantique 2 and a helicopter in support of anti-submarine warfare and a Hawkeye for the above-surface warfare.

Eight warships integrated in the SNMG1 (standing NATO maritime group – NATO : EMPD Leopold I (Belgium), EMPD Toronto (Canada), EMPD Corte Real (Portugal), EMPD Mecklenburg Vorpommern (Germany), EMPD Northumberland (United Kingdom), EMPD General Kazimierz Pulaski (Poland), EMPD Mendez Nunez (Spain) and a German submarine.
Several French Navy Rafale will also be present, intended to attack the force and will take turns with the air assets of the company AVDEF, representing different types of air threats.

The exercise will be conducted in two phases. The first will consist in basic exercises, without particular scenario, with the participating forces divided into two groups. The second will develop the exercises of the initial phase, within a tactical theme illustrative of a high intensity engagement.
